Overview:
1. Performance artists, improv; watch youtube "Grand Central Freeze" 2. James Luna, video and images of his work. 3. Discuss nature of performance art versus static visual arts. What is the role of art, where does art belongs, ethics 4. Look at Mark Jenkins' sculptures, use of non-traditional materials and display. 5. Discuss role of art in modern society. Is "guerrilla art simply the defacing of public property? Is it immoral for artists to display their art in public? Is addressing an issue through art any different than through other channels, Ie… In the news or by politicians? 6. Demo on packing tape casting, a la Jenkins style. Watch youtube demo on making a clear tape baby. Giveplastic handouts to groups showing steps of process. 7. Students will work on making their own packing tape object, or rotate on computers in pairs or in threes. Computer groups: conduct research on guerrilla art and compare/contrast two artists using different media. Can art be more than something nice to look at or watch? Does art belong in a museum, on a stage? Do you need permission to make art? To display it? Can art change people? Can art change the world? State Standards: Learning Standards in Art (for your state) aligned with this lesson. Students will: (1) use and organize two-dimensional and three dimensional media, techniques, tools, and processes to produce works of art that are derived from personal experience, observation, or imagination; (2) use good craftsmanship in a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media; and (3) understand that subject matter used to create unique works of art can come from personal experience, observation, imagination, and themes.
